The Suru-urushi finished Magewappa are meticulously crafted by Traditional Craftsman Takayuki Kojima. He handles all processes himself, including wood selection, wood preparation, bending, and lacquering. He is one of the few traditional craftsmen who has inherited both the "Magewappa" and "Urushi" traditions and techniques of Kiso.
The materials used are two types of natural wood: high-quality Kiso Hinoki (cypress) and Kiso Sawara (Japanese cypress) grown at the foot of Mount Ontake. For the bent sides, he uses Kiso Hinoki, known for its excellent durability, humidity control, and antibacterial properties. For the lid and bottom plates, he uses Kiso Sawara, which has superior water absorption and moisture retention. The finish is Suru-urushi, a technique where raw lacquer is directly rubbed into the wood.
