We have received a new shipment of "Hon-tanebasami" scissors from Umeki Hontanebasami Seisakusho.
These Hon-tanebasami scissors, crafted by blacksmith Shoji Umeki, are extremely rare, fully hand-forged scissors made by forge welding.
The tradition and technique of Hon-tanebasami have been passed down through generations of the Makise family of blacksmiths. The Makise family has a long history, beginning as sword smiths. After the introduction of firearms and pivot-point scissors, they became firearms and scissor smiths, boasting a history of over 1000 years, from the first generation of sword smiths to the 37th generation.
However, the 37th generation, Yoshifumi Makise, passed away in 2016, bringing an end to the Makise family's legacy. Currently, Shoji Umeki, the sole apprentice of the 37th generation, has inherited these traditional skills and is producing Hon-tanebasami using their traditional manufacturing methods.
Today, Mr. Umeki is the only one who preserves the traditional manufacturing methods of Hon-tanebasami, carrying out all processes by hand.
The most distinguishing feature of Hon-tanebasami is the twisted blade, known as "neri." This "neri" causes the blades to meet at a single point, sharpening themselves with each cut, and is said to maintain a long-lasting sharpness.
